Camille's Percentage Growing Post

Question #1:
What is a good definition of percent? You shoul use words symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition.

CLICK THE PICTURE!

Question #2: How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.

If you divide 3 into 5, you will get o.6 = 3/5=0.6

If you divide 3 into 5, then times it by 100, you will get 60% = 3/5 = 0.6 x 100 = 60%

3/5 and 3:2 are also the same. The number 3 (numerator) is the first part, then subtract the number 5 (demoninator) into number 3 (numerator) (5-3=2) so you can get the second part. So 3/5 becomes 3:5.

Question #3:
Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80.

1.) 80/100=0.8 or 1%
0.8=1%
35 x 0.8=28 (35% of 80 is 28)

2.) 80/2=40 or 50%
50%=40
50/2=25%
25 = 20
40/2=20 or 25% + 10 = 8

25=20
+10=8
______
35 = 28
______
100 = 80

(25 x 0.8 = 20, 10 x 0.8=8, 35 x 0.8=28, 100 x 0.8=80)

3.) 80/10=8
5%=4 because half of 10 is 5 and 4 is half of 8.
10%=8
5%=4
8 x 4-5=28

Question #4:
Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link here with a review (what the post was talking about, yes you have to read the post and why others should read the post, too).

I found a link to blogs that deals with percentages. I left a comment and I told the scriber that he or she did a really graet job (that's not all, I added more). Here's the link: http://linden8z.blogspot.com/

The scriber showed 3 different ways of how to get a percent. The scriber explained each 3 different ways.
1.)Other people should read the post because they can learn something that they don not know by reading the post.
2.)If they forgot how to do the 3 different ways, they can go to that blog and read the post.
3.)If they can't understand how to do it, they can go to that blog and read it.

Question #5
The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms. Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms. Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms. Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

Ms. Stanzi's could be correct. Why? What if Ms. Stanzi's class is greater than Ms. Lowrey's class. Example: Whta if Ms. Stanzi has 50 students. Divide 50 by 2, 50/2=25. And what if Ms. Lowrey has 40 students. Divide 40 by 2, 40/2=20. Ms. Stanzi=25 students meet their reading goal, Ms. Lowrey=20 students meet their reading goal. That's why Ms. Stanzi could be right if she have more students than Ms. Lowrey.

Question #6
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.

a) 16 is 40% of what number?

b) What is 120% of 30?
You need 2 grids because 120 is larger than 100

Question # 2:
How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.
3/5 is same as 3:2, 60% and 0.6 because when you convert 3/5 into ratio the answer is 3:2, when you convert the 3/5 to percent the answer is 60% and when you convert the 3/5 into decimal the answer is 0.6. look at the pictures so you can understand it better!

I found a link that deals with percentages. I really think that the scriber of this post really did a great job. this is the link:
http://linden8z.blogspot.com/2006/11/percentages-real-deal.html
people should read this post because:
1)it really helps you if you dont understand percenatges.
2)it tells how to convert fraction to percent.
3)it tells how to ge the lowest term of a fraction.

Question # 5
The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

for me Ms. Stanzi is right because the number of the children in her class is probably more than the number of the children in Ms. Lowrey's class. im going to give you an example.. let's say that the representing number of Ms. Stanzi's class is 30. the number of 50% of 30 is 15. then in Ms. Lowrey's class the representing number is 25. the number of 55% of 25 is 13.75. so it means that Ms. Stanzi's right, but if you're going to use different numbers Ms. Stanzi can be wrong.

Question 1 -
What is a good definition of percent? You should use words symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition.

A percent is a number out of 100. It's a part of 100 and can be converted into a fraction, decimal and ratio. It first meant " by the hundred." Symbol: %
To get a percent into a fraction you take the number and put it over 10, 100, 1000 etc.
and try to simplify. eg. 85% = 85/100 divide both by 5 and you get 17/20.

Question 2 -
How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.

They are all the same because they are all equivalent to each other.
0.6 -
3 divided by 5 = 0.6, 0.6 x 100 = 60%, 3:2 = 3/5 = 3 divided by 5 = 0.6

60%
- 3/5 = 3 x 100 divided by 5 = 60%, 3:2 = 3/5 = 3 divided by 5 = 0.6 x 100 = 60%,

3:2 - 3/(3+2) = 3/5, 3 divided by 5 = 0.6, 0.6 x 100 = 60%

3/5 -
3 divided by 5 = 0.6, 0.6 x 100 = 60
%, 3:(5-3) = 3:2

Question 3 -

Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80. (bubbleshare is an excellent tool to animate the many different ways of finding these answer).

1) 35 divided by 100 = 0.35 x 80 = 28

2) 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 = 35/100 80 divided by 10 = 8 8 d
ivided by 2 = 4
8 + 8 + 8 + 4 = 28/80

They haven't allowed you to see it yet... but they will soon. This post talks about money and percents. Like interest and stuff like that in the bank. They have really good detail and a nice layout.

Question 5 -
The principal announced that 50%
of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not?

Well Ms. Stanzi could be correct and she could be incorrect. I
t all depends on how many students are in each class. Let's say Ms. Stanzi has 40 and Ms. Lowrey has 34. Now Ms. Stanzi would have 20 students who met their reading goal because... 40 = 100, 40 divided by 2 = 20... and Ms. Lowrey would have 17 students who met their reading goal because... 34 = 100, 34 divided by 2 = 17.

Question 6 -
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate
the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.

a) 16 is 40% of what number?

- 16 divided by 40 = o.40 which is 1%
0.40 x 100 = 40

So that means 16 is 40% of 40.

b) What is 120% of 30?

- 120 divided by 100 = 1.2
1.2 x 30 = 36

Boeun's Percentage Growing Post

Question 1:

What is a good definition of percent? You should use words symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition.

I made a mind map from Gliffy.

Example Questions:

If I got 29 out of 40 and Mr. Harbeck got 30 out of 50, who got more right on the tests that Mr. Harbeck and I took??

For this kinds of questions, it's easier to deal with percents. To get percents, you have to divide Numerator by Denominator, or you have to fix those fractions' denominator to 10, 100, 1000, or you might have to make it into 10000. It just hurts Mr. Harbeck's and my brain too much. Anyways, I'll show you how to get percent.

I used Bubbleshare for showing how to solve.

Question 2
How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.

I used bubbleshare for this question too.

Many people and I thought that I should put some explanations.

Here are my explanations,

I think 3/5, 3:2, 60% and 3/5, 3:2, 60% a d 0.6 are the same, because when I convert them to a percent, it gives me 60% equaly.

For 3/5, if you do 3 divide by 5, gives me 0.6, and if I multiply 0.6 by 100, it gives me 60%.

Next, 3:2, to get the percent of this ratio, first, I have to convert this to a fraction. To convert this to a fraction, I have to know the top, which is the numerator. The numerator would be 3.
To get the bottom, the denominator, I have to add 3 and 2 together because 3 and 2 are the parts of the whole thing. This gives me 3/5. Now I have to get the percentage, so i'm dividing 3 by 5, which is 0.6. Finally, I have to multiply 10 by 0.6 = 60%.

The 60% is samething. It means that I don't have to do any work for this!

For 0.6 to be 60%, I have to multiply 0.6 by 10, which gives me 60% again!!

So, my final answer is that 3/5, 3:2, 60% and 0.6 are the SAME!!!

3/5 = 3:2 = 60% = 0.6

Question 3
Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80.

For this question, I also used bubbleshare. It is really easy to work with.

I also thought this question needs some explanations too.

First, I found 1% and multiplied the answer by 35, because 1% is only one square if you colour in the grid. So i multiplied it by 35 so my answer can be right. My answer is 0.85 x 35 = 29. 75

Second, I found 10% and found 5% also, because 10% x 3 equals 30%, and 10% x 4 equals 40%.
What I did was that I found 10% from dividing 10 from 100%. That gave me 10% and I multiplied 10% by 3.
The next step I took was that I divided 10% by 2, so that it will give me the 5%. After that, I added 30% and 5%, which was my final answer.

Last, I found 5% to get 35%, because I can just go and multiply 7.
To get 5% from 100%, you have to divide it by 20. This gave me 4.25. After that, I multiplied it by 7, and the answer was 29.25, which was the same answer as the other two at the top.

Question 4
Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review

I left a comment at here:
http://linden8m.blogspot.com/
He or she explained how to get percent and gave us some examples, but I don't think that will make people to understand quickly. So i left a comment that he/she might want to put some example questions and solve the questions step by step, with some explanations between.

I also went to another one. This is,
http://linden8z.blogspot.com/
He/she explained very well, but it was boring to me. I thought if they could put some colours and pictures at the top, not at the bottom, that might get attentions from people.

For this one, I found one example that is real simply explained.

ex. 1. 75% of 40= 30We know this because 75% is really 75/100. Now we divide 75 into 100. That will give us 0.75. Now multiply 0.75 by 40. That gives us 30.

Question 5
The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

I think Ms. Stanzi could be right, because the question didn't tell us how many people were in each classes. For example, what if Ms. Stanzi had 40 students in her class and Ms. Lowrey has 20 students?

Again, I used bubbleshare for this question too.

This album is powered by
BubbleShare

My explanations:

For the percents, Ms. Stanzie and Ms. Lowrey, but after finding how many students that Ms. Stanzie had for 50% and Ms. Lowrey, Ms. Stanzie had more students than Ms. Lowrey. So, my final answer is YES, Ms. Stanzie could be right by having more students than Ms. Lowrey.

Question 6
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.

a) 16 is 40% of what number?

I think the question means
'a mistary number's 40% is 16. What is that mistary number?'
To solve this kind of question, you have to know what is the 10% of this whole number. if the 40% of a mistary number is 16, than you can divide it by 4, and it will give you 10% of that mistary number. So multiply it my 10, than it will give you 100%, which is that mistary number! I'll show you how to get that step by step, with question b. (BUBBLESHARE)

b) What is 120% of 30?

I think the question means
' 100% is 30. What number is 120%?'
To solve this kind of question, you have to know what the 5%,10%,20%,30%....and so on, but it just hurts my brain too much to find it with 30% or any number that is not 20%. I can do it as 10%, but it's just too much works. So, my way to solve this problem is that i will divide 100% by 5, so it will give me 20%, and i'll multiply 20% by 6, because if i multiply 20% by 5, it gives me 100% and I want 120%! I'll show you how to get that step by step, with question a. (BUBBLESHARE)

Question 1:What is a good definition of percent? You should use symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition.(suggestion gliffy is an excellent tool for adding detail to your definition.)

Answer; A percentage is part of a whole and also a equivalent fraction. Percentages can convert into a decimal, a fraction and a ratio.
<--This picture is called a percent sign. It is called a percent because their are only Two 0's.
Here's a website that explains more about percents. :
http://www.aaaknow.com/pct.htm

Question #2: How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.
Answer; To find out if the three are all the same you first.

- First divide 3 by 5 then that will equal. to 0.6
Then you divide 3 to 5 , then multiply it by a hundred, then you will get 60.
60% is euqual to 3/5 and 3:2.
- The reason why 3:2 is equaled wth 3/5 and 0.6 is because... 3:2-- 3+2=5. <-- Five is the denominator of the fraction. And the 3 is the numerator, and the 2 is to add the 3.

Question #3:Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80.

1:) 80 Divided by 100=0.8 * 35 = 28 (<-- that is how much 1 square is worth) 2:) 80 Divided by 10 = 8 - The 5 percent is = to 4 ,because half of 10 is 5 and half of 8 is 4.
- Then to get 28 you multiply 8 by 4= and that will equal to 32 then you subract 5, because that is how much the half of ten is.

Ms. Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms. Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

I think Ms. Stanzi is right. but What if Ms. Stanzi's class is greater than mrs. Loreys class.

-- what if there was 50 studens in ms. Stanzi's class. i think you have to divide 50 by 10= and that would equal to 5.
-- what if there was 55 students in ms. Lowreys class. i think you have to dived 55 by 10= and that will equal to 5.5

Question #6 Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.

a) 16 is 40% of what number?

--> If you cant read that is says:..
16 divided by 40=0.4
The decimal contains the value of 1 square.
0.4x100(whole#ofgrid)=40.
To make sure the answer is 40 you divide 40 by a 100 and that equals to 0.4 so you multiply it by 40 and it will equal to 16.
The arrow is pointing a square and it says 10 squares are equaled to 16.

Question 5
The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.
There's 2 ways of answering this question.
1)Ms.Stanzi might, be right if she has a greater amount of students than Ms.Lowrey. It doesn't really matter on how many students Ms.Lowrey may have (in percents); Ms. Stanzi's class will always have a greater amount of students that met their reading goals.
2)My second answer is that Ms.Stanzi might also be right if she has the same number of students in her class as Ms.Lowrey.If it were, then Ms.Lowrey's class would have a greater amount of students who reached their reading goal. It would be so because 55% is obviously larger than 50%

Question 6
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.
a) 16 is 40% of what number?
40 stands for the number of squares shaded in. the 16 stands for how much the 40 squares are worth. The first thing we do is we put these numbers into a fraction = 16/40 . Then we divide 16 by 40 which would equal 0.40 (1 square or 1%). After that we multiply 0.40 by 100 which equals 40. The whole unit square is worth 40.

b) What is 120% of 30?
If we were to put this in a fraction, the numerator will be larger than the denominator because 120% is bigger than 100%. First we find 1% or 1 square by dividing 100 by 30 which is 0.3. We then multiply 1.20 by 1% (0.3) which equals to 36. 120% of 30 is 36/30.
