Jaymie's Percentage Growing Post

Question 1
What is a good definition of percent? You should use words symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition.
A percentage is an equivalent fraction that is out of 100. It is a part of a whole. Percentages can be converted into decimals, ratios, and fractions. The percent sign, % means that the number is out of 100 since there are two 0's. The french word for 100 is "cent" so a percentage would be per 100. Here is a web showing somethings you can do with percentages.

Question 2
How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.

3/5, 3:2, 60% and 0.6 are equivalents. Watch this bubbleshare to understand more.

Question 3
Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80.

1. 100%=80(total) 1%=0.8(80 divided by 100) 0.8x35(35%)=28

35% of 80 is 28.

3. 100%=80, 1%=0.8, 10%=8(80 div.100=0.8x10=8), 5%=4(80 div.100=0.8x5=4)

10%(8)x4=32-5%(4)=28

35% of 80= 28

Question 4
Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review (What the post was talking about....yes you have to read the post and why others should read the post) Hint In the side bar there are links to other schools. Three of them have done work on percentages!

Here is a blog that has a post that deals with percentages. I left a comment but it may not be seen yet since the person has to accept it. Click!
The post was was talking about percentages. It gave 3 explanations of how to get a percent. We use some of the ways like, we multiply the value of one square in the grid. For example, if we had a grid that was worth 100. One square would equal 1. So if we were trying to find 50% of that number we would multiply 1x50 to get 50. Fifty is 50% of 100, or another way of saying that is that it is half of 100.

Question 5
The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

Scenario 1.

Ms Stanzi, could be correct if she had more students then Ms Lowrey.

For example, If Ms Stanzi had 34 kids in her class 17 students(34/2=17) in her class must have met their reading goal. If Ms Lowrey had about 29 students, about 16 kids would have met theire reading goal. If you figure out the percentages it would be that 50% of Ms Stanzi's class would have met their reading goal and 55% of of Ms Lowrey's class would have met their reading goal. But as you can see if she did had more kids, her statement of having more students reach their reading goal could be true.

Scenario 2.

Ms Stanzi, could not be correct if she and Ms Lowrey had the same amout of students. Then the percentages would be saying that 50% of Ms Stanzi's class had met their reading goal and that 55% of Ms Lowrey's class had met their reading goal.

For example, if they each had 30 students. Ms Stanzi would have 15 students meet their reading goal and Ms. Lowrey would have about 16 or 17 students meet their reading goal.

Question 6
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.

a) 16 is 40% of what number?

To find the answer to this kind of question use this formula.
The number that the perecentage is worth(16) and put it over the percentage(40%) to make a fraction (16 over 40). Then divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal(0.4) Then you multiply the decimal(0.4) by 100 to get the total and in this case the total number would be 40. Now to check. Watch the bubbleshare on how to check.

b) What is 120% of 30?

This is one of the easier questions because the percentage is 120% that means that you add the total, 30)to the remaining percent, which in this case 20%. Now to find 20% you divide 30 by10 to get 3. Then you figure out how many groups of 10 there are in 20, there should be 2. Then you multiply 2x3 to get 6. Then you add the total, 30 to 6 (which is 20% of 30) together to get 36. So that means 120% of 30 is 36. This explanations might be a little confusing so wactch the video.
